In this webinar, Jennifer Kuhle, PhD, BCBA-D and Sarah Bergthold, PhD, BCBA explain how to conduct a concurrent operants assessment (COA). A COA is used to identify what motivates and maintains the child’s appropriate behavior, and it also helps the team develop interventions to increase desired behaviors. They provide step-by-step procedures and share data collection resources to conduct a COA. They help attendees visualize this by showing videos of how to conduct a COA on a student from start to finish. Towards the end of the presentation, they review what interventions to recommend based on the results of the COA. Please note that the examples provided in this webinar are geared towards students in early childhood and elementary school. Speaker Bios:

Sarah S. Bergthold, Ph.D., BCBA is a Behavior Consultant at Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency (MBAEA) in Bettendorf, Iowa. She received her Ph.D. from Illinois State University in 2010 in School Psychology.  After graduating, she worked as a School Psychologist for 9 years in the Davenport Community School District in Davenport, IA prior to her current position and obtaining her Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in 2014.  She leads a multidisciplinary team of behavior consultants, providing Applied Behavior Analytic (ABA) services to 21 school districts.  In 2015, she developed and still continues to manage a behavior clinic to increase and ensure access to ABA services for all students across the 21 districts they serve.  Additionally, she provides ABA training to MBAEA support staff, as well as district teachers, para educators, school counselors, instructional coaches, and administrators to increase and build capacity of behavioral knowledge and practices across the districts.  Her research interests include the assessment and treatment of comorbid mental health and challenging behavior of students in the school setting, as well as, the social validity of using experimental analysis for students with challenging behavior within the educational environment. 

Jennifer Kuhle, PhD, BCBA-D is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). She is a licensed psychologist and certified health service provider. Dr. Kuhle is a member of the interdisciplinary Intellectual Disability-Mental Illness team and provides outpatient behavioral therapy to children and adolescents. She has a particular interest in parent training. Prior to this position, Dr. Kuhle was a school psychologist for 9 years at the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency where she was a member of the Challenging Behavior Team and supported teachers and schools in the development and implementation of behavior plans.
