Description:
This presentation provides school psychologists with practical guidance for supporting students who may be experiencing eating disorders. Dr. Heather Tacovsky and Tara Rempel begin with a brief overview of eating disorders, including key background information, prevalence, and common risk factors. They review the important role schools play in prevention, early identification, and intervention. Next, the presentation outlines ten school-based strategies for recognizing warning signs, communicating with families, developing referral pathways, and supporting students within the school setting. The focus is on realistic, developmentally appropriate actions school psychologists can take. Emphasis is placed on creating safe, nonjudgmental spaces and using data to guide decision making. The session concludes with case studies that allow school psychologists to apply these strategies to real-world situations they may encounter in their work.
