Description:
This webinar explores how schools can strengthen their mental and behavioral health systems using a prevention-focused Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Dr. Katie Eklund and Dr. Nate von der Embse outline the growing need for school-based mental health services in schools. Participants learn how universal supports such as positive school climate, social-emotional learning, and mental health literacy can promote wellness for all students. The session highlights the role of early identification, including the use of universal screening to detect emerging social, emotional, and behavioral concerns. The presenters introduce a solution-focused assessment model that helps teams use data to determine whether supports should be delivered at the schoolwide, classroom, or individual/small-group level. Several targeted Tier 2 interventions are reviewed, with a deeper look at programs designed to address internalizing concerns such as anxiety and depression. The Resilience Education Program (REP) is featured as an example of a structured, evidence-based small group intervention that includes cognitive-behavioral skill instruction, a modified Check-In Check-Out mentoring system, and a family component that reinforces skills at home. It is available as a free resource in the Materials section of the webinar. Attendees leave with practical strategies for aligning school resources, data, and decision-making to build sustainable and effective school mental health systems.
